For as long as I can remember, Hartbeespoort Dam has been plagued by hyacinth. Many efforts have been made to eradicate it. Almost every aquatic scientist has worked on it at some time in their professional career. We can say two things with great certainty. Firstly, the hyacinth is a symptom of a problem, about which a great deal is known to science. Secondly, because it’s a symptom, all efforts have failed because they have ignored the basic problem. In short, you cannot solve a complex problem by treating only one symptom. You cannot cure a headache with painkillers if that headache is caused by an invisible cancer.
The problem with Hartbeespoort Dam is that inappropriate solutions are being applied to a misdiagnosed problem.
